eVTOL Aircraft & Urban Air Mobility in the UK — What You Need to Know in 2026

A guide to the UK’s electric vertical take-off and landing sector — the companies, technology and events shaping the future of urban flight.

Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft represent one of the most significant developments in aviation in decades. The UK is home to one of the most active eVTOL development programmes in the world, and commercial urban air mobility services are expected to begin in British cities within the next two to four years.

UK eVTOL Companies to Watch

Vertical Aerospace
🇬🇧 Bristol
Manufacturer of the VX4, with pre-orders from American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. Currently in flight test programme.
Urban-Air Port
🇬🇧 Coventry/London
UK’s leading vertiport developer, planning permanent UAM infrastructure across UK cities.
Skyports
🇬🇧 London
Vertiport design, development and operations. Working with multiple eVTOL manufacturers globally.
Wisk Aero (UK)
🌍 Global
Autonomous air taxi developer backed by Boeing, with UK operations planning underway.

When Will eVTOL Services Launch in the UK?

The most credible timelines for commercial passenger eVTOL services in the UK point to a 2027–2029 window for initial routes, subject to successful EASA type certification of the leading aircraft platforms. Initial services are expected to be premium-priced and limited to specific city-pair routes — likely connecting central London with airports or other high-demand destinations.

Cargo and medical logistics applications — which face fewer regulatory hurdles than passenger services — are likely to arrive sooner, potentially in 2026 or 2027 for some operators.

The Regulatory Framework

The CAA is developing its UAM regulatory framework in alignment with EASA’s Special Condition for VTOL aircraft and the emerging U-Space regulations for urban airspace management. The CAA published its first substantive UAM consultation in 2025, and further regulatory development is expected through 2026 and 2027.

What is an eVTOL aircraft?
An eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft uses electric motors and typically multiple rotors to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter, but with lower noise, lower emissions and potentially lower operating costs. They are designed for short-range urban and suburban trips.
Are eVTOL aircraft safe?
eVTOL aircraft must achieve EASA or CAA type certification before carrying passengers commercially — the same rigorous certification process applied to all commercial aircraft. Multiple redundant systems, distributed electric propulsion and advanced software give them strong inherent safety characteristics.
Where can I find eVTOL events in the UK?
The Sustainable Skies World Summit at Farnborough covers advanced air mobility including eVTOL. Internationally, the eVTOL Insights conference and Advanced Air Mobility Summit are the sector’s leading dedicated events — both listed in our Global Expo Calendar.
